Experience Greek Island hopping in style 2023

If the sun-drenched islands of Greece are beckoning you this European summer, perhaps consider leaving the tourist crowd behind in Mykonos, Crete and Santorini. Walk a different path and sail off to explore these six lesser known, but arguably more idyllic island locations in the Aegean which will leave you mesmerised.

1.     Ithaca

Looking for an island where you can disappear? Ithaca’s turquoise and emerald coves are popular with the sailing set. This idyllic Ionian Island is the legendary home of Odysseus. Head off on a hike and explore the eighth-century ruins of the palace or trek to the church of Anogi or the ruins of Alalkomene.

The town of Vathy is aeons from the classic island look with its lush green hills, colourful cafes, and neoclassical abodes.

Getting there:  While there is no airport in Ithica it’s a short ferry ride from Kefalonia or Lefkada.

2.     Paxos

One of the tiniest Ionian Islands, Paxos strikes the perfect balance of seclusion and sophistication. Meander through the vineyards and orchids down to bays where the sea is so clear and blue it sparkles like a sapphire.

With three harbour towns each with a vibrant social scene, here you will find live music and cocktails amongst the olive trees. Popular with the sailing set, hop off your yacht and explore the stone villas on the crest of the limestone cliffs along the shoreline or hire a motorboat to explore the pebble lined bays of Marmari and Kipiadi.

Getting there: Fly to the island of Corfu and then transfer by hydrofoil, sea taxi or ferry to Paxos

3.     Folegandros

Tucked away between Santorini and Milos lies the small Cycladic Island of Folegandros. Perched atop the cliffs the main city Hora is brimming with café’s, tavernas and bars across its three squares.

No airport, no cruise terminal and scant traffic ensures its enduring tranquillity. Aside from walking, swimming, and drinking there’s little else to do on Folegandros but put your feet up and enjoy the summer splendour.

Getting there: A ferry from Santorini, or from nearby Cycladic islands.

4.     Kimolos

While the volcanic island of Milos has long been popular amongst the Instagram set, the neighbouring island of Kimolos is the hidden jewel of the Cycladic islands. With its chalky white villages, turquoise water and volcanic thermal springs, Kimolos has incredible beaches minus the tourists.

Relax and unwind enjoying the local hospitality, explore one of the many churches or just find a secluded spot to soak in the sun with a book in hand.

Getting there: Fly from Athens to Milos and take a ferry ride to Kimolos.

This picturesque neoclassical port on the island of Symi is a Grecian national monument. As you sail in around the headland you will be enchanted by the spectacular architecture of the mansions built by its 19th century spice merchant inhabitants.

Hidden amongst the island’s hinterland, dotted beneath the pine and cypress forests are monasteries waiting to be explored. With the pinnacle being the Panormitis monastery.

Symi’s cast away coves offer laid-back glamour with views out across the luminous sea, this is an island that will have you captivated and never wanting to leave.

Getting there: Fly to Rhodes and take a catamaran or ferry to Symi.

Kythnos has more beaches than any other island in the Cyclades. With over 100 to discover, you are spoilt for choice. Pebbly, sandy and everything in between many beaches feature a local taverna which is the perfect spot for a lazy long lunch.

If you’re feeling more energetic, take your pick of Kythnos’ many hiking trails taking in Byzantine monuments, little chapels, windmills and archaeological sites.
