Travel tips: How to avoid jet lag like a boss

Ready to jet off for a European or American summer trip? Or just heading overseas for your next business trip and want to arrive feeling refreshed and able to soar through your next meeting?

We’ve uncovered some of the best tips for managing jet lag like a boss.

Before you take off

Have you heard of Timeshifter? Timeshifter is a highly rated app that helps travellers adjust to their new international time zones by using science to help overcome jet lag starting well before take off.

Travellers using the app put in their planned travel dates and Timeshifter helps by suggesting small adjustments to your usual routine in the lead up to flying to help your body’s natural circadian rhythm adjust more easily to your environment.

This involves increasing or decreasing exposure to natural light, avoiding caffeine, or using supplements like melatonin. Helping to gradually shift the body’s natural sleep / awake patterns so travellers arrive feeling less tired.

Getting sleep onboard

Sleeping onboard your flight is a must and with lay flat beds elevating the sleeping experience on many international business class and first class flights, it’s a much more pleasurable experience.

However, some tips for sleeping onboard include trying to align your sleep time with what would be night in your city of departure, meaning opting for an overnight flight is often a good choice.

Don’t forget to get comfy for sleep in the onboard PJ’s, eye masks, and make sure you bring those noise cancelling headphones!

Stay hydrated while onboard and limit alcohol if you want to both sleep well and arrive feeling your best.

When you arrive

Some top tips for avoiding jet lag that are tried and tested by many frequent business travellers include getting outside for a walk or some exercise when you arrive.

This ticks two boxes, being fresh air and exposure to daylight at your new destination, once again helping to adjust your bodies circadian rhythm.

If saying awake is all too hard, then op for a power nap, but try to limit it to 20 minutes. So, you get some rest, but it doesn’t affect your sleep pattern later in the evening.

With all these tips, we hope you enjoy a jet-lag free trip on your next journey. Or if all else fails, we’d recommend a nice strong espresso to keep you going!
